A snapshot in time

OK, I know this has been bouncing around the blogosphere and Facebook, but I can't help posting it -- this glimpse into San Francisco days before the 1906 earthquake is marvelous. More important than the subsequent devastation (to me) is that the film shows a historically fascinating moment in time. I find the mix of horses, bikes, cars, buggies and cable cars absolutely hypnotizing. It's a crazy overlap of new and old technology. To say nothing of the absurdly prodigious and formal layers of clothing that everyone is wearing! It's amazing that we went from such tricked out gear to wearing sweatpants and PJs in public. Everyone I've talked to gets something different out of the video.

Just watch the clip, you won't regret it.

  1. Reminds me of the Model A my grandfather built when we were kids.. sadly, we had no horses to run alongside it, though.

The background music is terrible, but the clip is truly amazing. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Glad you like it! I had total Lartigue flashbacks when I was rewatching it.

I laughed when I read the horses bit, I just know Baby Skullhead will want horses because, as children, we all do. We can't help it. Everyone wants a pony.
